1. Goal
Let it be your number one goal if you really want to venture into the poultry farming business. Without setting a goal to achieve something, it's impossible to see it in reality.
2. Research
If you don't know what you are doing, it's called gambling but if you have well knowledge about what you are doing and the likely outcome of it, it's called an investment. Before starting anything, whether business, marriage, eating, selling, friendships etc, you have to do research. Ask Google, read from books, watch videos, visit Farms, ask experienced people in the field about the poultry farm business you want to start.
3. Land
After doing your research, you need land. You have to consider buying land for the poultry farming business. It's advisable to buy one acre of land if you can not buy 2 or 3 or 4 acres of lands. The land should be close to a big city or one hour drive to a big city. Buying land at a nearby village close to the big city can be little bit affordable. Also when buying the land, it should be little bit away from residential area to avoid misunderstandings between you and the people in the community
4. Borehole
You are going to need water to build the structures and also to feed your birds. Poultry drink a lot of water and therefore it's advisable to dig a borehole.
5. Structures
How many birds do you want to start with ? 80 by 40 ft rectangular shape structure can accommodate 2000 birds. 40 by 40 takes 1000 birds. 20 by 20 feet can take 500 day old chicks. After building the structure for the birds, you would need a structure for your worker, for storing maize and where to mix their feeds etc.
6. Equipments
The next thing to consider buying is poultry equipments. You are going to need drinkers, feeders, brooders, wheelbarrow, shovel, boots, basins, water storage tanks etc
7. Feeding
Feeding is another crucial aspect of poultry farming business. In fact 60 -80% is going to go into feeding your poultry. You need to consider your financial status before starting the poultry farming business. Chick mash is given to day old chicks for the first 2 weeks. You can mix your own poultry feed from 2 weeks going if you have the right knowledge about it.
8. Financing
Never quit your job that gives you cash flow. Poultry farming is capital intensive so please never stop the job that brings in the cash flow. If you don't have any cash flow, it's advisable to have one before starting the poultry farming business.
